City of El Centro Enters Exclusive Talks with Scripps Health for El Centro Regional Medical Center Affiliation
Affiliation to Improve Health Care Quality and Access in Imperial Valley
EL CENTRO, Calif. – The City of El Centro today announced the execution of an exclusive negotiating agreement with Scripps Health, a private, nonprofit health system in San Diego, California. This 90-day agreement begins exclusive negotiations for the possible acquisition and management of El Centro Regional Medical Center (ECRMC) by Scripps.
In May, the City Council voted unanimously to seek an affiliation partner for ECRMC to elevate the quality of local health care by enhancing services and increasing access points for care in the Imperial Valley, and to eliminate any future liability for the city.
“El Centro Regional Medical Center has a long and successful history of serving the health care needs of El Centro and the Imperial Valley,” said Chris Van Gorder, Scripps President and CEO.  “With all the changes occurring in health care now, Scripps is in a unique position to help El Centro continue that tradition. We look forward to productive discussions toward that end.”
“After reaching out to more than 30 organizations as part of our exploration, we are pleased to be entering this next phase with Scripps Health,” said David Green, Chief Executive Officer of ECRMC. “Their mission and values align with the mission and values of El Centro Regional Medical Center, and we feel that together the city, the hospital, and most importantly, patients will greatly benefit from this affiliation.”
El Centro Regional Medical Center is a licensed 161-bed general acute care facility located in El Centro, California. ECRMC is committed to providing the community with high quality healthcare as reflected in its mission statement: “To Provide Healthcare Excellence For The Imperial Valley.”
In addition to the general acute care hospital, ECRMC has four outpatient centers throughout Imperial County, two rural health clinics and two specialty care providers, oncology/hematology and wound healing.
Founded in 1924 by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps, Scripps Health is a nonprofit integrated health system based in San Diego, Calif. Scripps treats a half-million patients annually through the dedication of 2,600 affiliated physicians and 13,500 employees among its five acute-care hospital campuses, hospice and home health care services, and an ambulatory care network of physician offices and 26 outpatient centers and clinics.
Recognized as a leader in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, Scripps is also at the forefront of clinical research, genomic medicine, wireless health care and graduate medical education. With three highly respected graduate medical education programs, Scripps is a longstanding member of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Truven Health Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters) has named Scripps one of the top five large health systems in the nation. Scripps is nationally recognized in six specialties by U.S. News & World Report, which places Scripps cardiovascular program among the top 20 in the country. Scripps has been consistently recognized by Fortune, Working Mother magazine and AARP as one of the best places in the nation to work. More information can be found at
