Program Overview

What You Will Learn

  • During the first half of the program, you will learn to:
  • Eat healthy without giving up all the foods you love
  • Add physical activity to your life, even if you don’t think you have time
  • Deal with stress
  • Cope with challenges that can derail your hard work-like how to choose healthy food when eating out
  • Get back on track if you stray from your plan-because everyone slips now and then

In the second half of the program, you will enhance the skills you’ve learned so you can maintain the changes you’ve made. These sessions will review key ideas such as tracking your food and physical activity, setting goals, staying motivated, and overcoming barriers. You may learn some new information, too. The lifestyle coach and small group will continue to support you.

Time Commitment

The ECRMC Diabetes Prevention Program runs for one year.

  • During the first 6 months of the program, you will meet once a week for 16 weeks.
  • During the second 6 months, you’ll meet once or twice a month.

It is important to remember that all participants that are changing their lifestyle have to engage in a significant process that requires full commitment and dedication. For this reason, we encourage our participants to complete the year round program and not miss any session.

Program Benefits

The ECRMC Diabetes Prevention program pays off as it encourages its participants to increase the use of primary care and preventative services. It teaches them to exercise and bring awareness on the prevention tools that are available in the Imperial County. The Diabetes Prevention program will increase quality of life and decrease sick days at work. Participants enrolled in the program will be part of a learning process of diabetes prevention and will be empowered to make better choices, be able to transfer the knowledge and healthier habits to all family members, friends, and to the community, thereby giving hope not only to participants but to the community at large.
